The Building

A Francophone schoolhouse, reborn

19 Melrose Avenue — known as the Schoolhouse Lofts — is one of Ottawa's most culturally significant loft conversions. Built in 1912 as École du Sacré-Cœur, a Francophone Catholic school at the heart of Hintonburg, the building stood as a symbol of the French community's decades-long struggle for the right to educate their children in their language. Designated a heritage property in 2006, it was meticulously converted in 2009 by The Regional Group and architect Douglas Hardie, creating 12 unique hard loft suites. New windows were carefully crafted to match the originals, and the building's iconic clay-tiled canopy entrance with exposed timber rafters was fully preserved. The project won the Ottawa Architectural Conservation Awards' Award of Excellence — Adaptive Use and Infill in 2011.

Building History

A century of community, language and resilience

Few buildings in Ottawa carry the cultural weight of 19 Melrose. Designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, built to serve a Francophone community fighting for its rights, and later preserved as a living monument to that struggle — before becoming one of the city's most celebrated loft addresses.

1912
École du Sacré-Cœur — Francis SullivanDesigned by Ottawa architect Francis Sullivan — a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright known for his Prairie style buildings — the school is built to serve the Francophone Catholic children of Hintonburg at a moment of intense political struggle. Protests against the Ontario Government's restrictions on French-language education were held across Ottawa, and École du Sacré-Cœur stands as a direct testament to that resistance.
1998
School ClosesAfter nearly 90 years as an educational institution, the school concludes its service to the Francophone community of Hintonburg. The building is vacated and stands idle as its future is considered.
2006
Heritage DesignationThe City of Ottawa designates 19 Melrose Avenue under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, recognising its outstanding cultural heritage value as a reminder of the Francophone community's vitality and the French language struggles of early 20th-century Ontario.
2009
Schoolhouse Lofts — The Regional Group & Douglas HardieThe Regional Group, working with architect Douglas Hardie, completes the sensitive conversion into 12 hard loft suites. New windows are fabricated to match the originals precisely. The clay-tiled entrance canopy with exposed timber rafters is fully preserved. 2011
Award of Excellence — Adaptive Use and InfillThe Regional Group receives the Ottawa Architectural Conservation Awards' highest honour for adaptive reuse — recognising Schoolhouse Lofts as an exemplary model of heritage-sensitive infill development and community-conscious conversion.
